RICH & COMPELLING
Magenta with a garnet tint, the nose is greeted with a savoury herbal blend of thyme, sage and bay leaf: a bouquet Garni for the senses with a background of black fruit (cherry, plum, and berry). In its youthful state, structure rides over fruit presence. Upon aeration, ripening red and black fruit find their way in the glass and unfold on the palate abetted with surprisingly moderate tannic structure. Carafe 2 hours before service.

The ability of chardonnay to seek out, get educated on and assimilate the rhythms of South Bay is almost always impressive. but news flash; merlot can do it to. Few vineyards in Ontario allow the much maligned, respect need be given grape variety. By my count this is approximately 1.6 hectares of uniqueness, ripened quite admirably (maybe not quite Niagara River ripe) but achievable nonetheless. Huff gives good to best vintage fruit its due with 15 months credit in French wood (30 per cent new). While it may not be lush and crushed velvet ripe this Four Acre ’19 speaks in phenolic ripeness vernacular so very few of County origin can claim to have mastered. As such the perfume and swarthy energy combine for a bright, wide-eyed, slightly foxy, bushy-tailed merlot. While wholly parochial it stands on structured legs so expect the pace to be calculated, measured and long. Drink 2022-2027. Tasted June 2021.

Salty and lively, this appealing, mid-weight merlot features lightly grippy tannins and is brimming with plum and cherries. The palate offers delicate wood spice that is finely woven into the fruit, excellent balance and pitch-perfect ripeness. Well done. Best now to 2025. Tasted June 2021.
