Apertif to enjoy while on your yacht … or dingy, whichever you prefer. Also, a great wine to “pregame” before going out with friends or a date night. Light and easy to calm the nerves and doesn’t leave you with that awkward purple stained mouth.

Pinot Gris has for several vintages now been a quiet success story at Huff Estate, with winemaker Frederic Picard working his French-honed sensibility into a fragrant mild mannered but very accurate examples. This has a classic nose of peach pie, honeysuckle and lemon. It is light to mid-weight, generously fruity but firm with that leaner, brittle County edge, and a touch of youthful spritz. Slightly pithy and bitter on the finish. The length is very good to excellent.

Makes reference to “hilling up” the vines to help survive those polar vortex winter weeks when temperatures drop beyond reproach. Buried Vine is a near dry, 100 per cent pinot gris running down the middle of bone density, alcohol and textural feels. Carries a soda-salty note in its aromatic entry, turns towards stone-orchard fruit ripening in the sun and stays a sapid course all the way through. High quality effort in 2020 with a satisfying quench. Drink 2021-2022. Tasted June 2021.
