Thanksgiving Pairing Options

With the colours changing, it’s time to start thinking about Thanksgiving. Traditionally, with the harvest coming in from across all the farms – not just the vineyards – families would gather to share the bounty of the land. Good food and drink still brings people together and our staff here at Huff Estates would like to share with you some ideas for a Fall Feast. 

And, of course, time to watch the annual Canadian Football League Thanksgiving classic – this year featuring the Ottawa Redblacks visiting the Montreal Alouettes. 

Offer your family and guests an informal make-ahead menu for a Thanksgiving matinee:

Kick-off: May we suggest our VQA 2022 GETAWAY Rose. Tantalizingly tart Old World in style to serve with an array of Mediterranean tapas.

  • Feta, smoked salmon scallion tarts
  • Cherry tomatoes stuffed with bocconcini and pesto
  • Caponata on crostini
  • Tarte Nicoise. (Onion, anchovy, olives)

And for THANKSGIVING Dinner

Appetizers: Bring on VQA 2022 Sante.  A sparkling Riesling! 

  • chili/ lime cashews
  • shrimp, avocado salsa on pita toasts 
  • endive/ stilton pear tarts

PrimoVQA 2022 JUST BECAUSE Pinot Gris.

  • New potato, leek, fennel soup with apple oil.

MAIN COURSE options

Turkey – Roast of turkey basted in Merlot adorned with port/ cranberry sauce. Served with Brussels sprouts, chestnut bacon butter and Parmesan roasted parsnips. 

Beef – Sirloin with herbed mustard crust and shallot gravy with beetroot and horseradish purée.

Pair with VQA 2021 FOUR ACRE Merlot

Ham – Baked ham with spiced marmalade glaze served with braised cabbage and pancetta. 

Pair with VQA 2022 DAY TRIPPING Riesling

Duck – Roast duck with spicy clementine sauce enhanced with glazed baby veg, sautéed escarole and braised red cabbage.

Pair with 2021 Old Vine Cabernet Franc

Vegetarian menu:

Starter: Sautéed scallops with mush/ spinach sauce (for vegan option, try king oyster mushroom ‘scallops’ with this EatingWell recipe)

Salad:  Pear, date and walnut salad. 

Main:   Whole baked squash with spiced couscous. 

Pair with VQA 2021 CATHARINE’S Chardonnay. 

And for dessert: Pumpkin Cheesecake with Pecan Graham Cracker crust. If you have room, that is!
